What it means to be an educated person? Education is one of the top free priorities and components of today’s civilized societies along with health and security. This is what experts concluded and frankly this is what I personally think. Education is the basic component of building a modern, civilized society so it should be considered a very important issue. Education starts in the early stages of our lives and continues in many ways and forms during our lifetime so it is a lifelong process.
To fully understand what constitutes being an educated person, we must first understand the Journey through which a person becomes educated. One of the most important results of the educational process is that through its various tools and experiences can set our mind in the direction of a continuous curiosity, a continuous learning process and personal development. Education is knowledge and knowledge is powerful tool. It can help you to think rational, to make Judgments, to make the difference between right and wrong.
For some people however, there Is a hunger, an innate need to continue learning. This is the beginning of the development of an educated person. The more information they know, the more they realize they do not know. In some of us it can start as a little sparkle of Interest to become a tremendous fire of desire, fire which can not be extinguished. It can free us not Just mentally, but through this- as we have many examples- It can free us physically too.
This Is what happened to Frederick Douglas who describes In his autobiography, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, an American Slave”, how the fact that he learned to read and to rite transformed him, made him to became a free men. It was this everlasting thinking of my condition that tormented me. There was no getting rid of It. It was pressed upon me by every object within sight or hearing, animate or Inanimate. The silver trump of freedom had roused my soul to eternal wakefulness.
Freedom now appeared, to disappear no more forever. (Douglas 197-201) This process, known as education, can take on many forms and Is rarely the same for any two people. Education Is not the learning of any one piece of Information or area f study, but the personal task of learning all the Information available. It Is the process of gaining knowledge, knowledge of oneself through Introspection and Intuition, of others through conversation and observation, and the surrounding world through all of these life skills.
None of these things Is easy; edification and the path to becoming an educated person are pursuits that take dedication and effort. Beside this dedication and effort sometimes luck could play and Important role In this path. To be In the right place at the right moment can be a decisive factor. Probably most of us can’t realize what Is holding In us, what our real potential Is and now to explore I t. Ana someone Nell Trot outside, even walkout Knowing, could help us or guide us to a certain path in which we probably wouldn’t have think to go.
It happens to a lot of people to discover themselves in areas they wouldn’t dream about and have some remarkable personal achievements. Let’s take the example of Nicholas Gage, who came to United States as a Greek refugee when he was a child. In his book “A place for us”, from where we read the narrative, he describes the difficult adjustment he and his sister aced after arriving in their new country and pays tribute to the teacher he sees as the inspiration and the motivating force behind his later success as a writer.
This is truly the land of opportunity, and I would have enjoyed its bounty even if I hadn’t walked into Miss Herd’s classroom in 1953.
