In this essay, I will iscuss the Impact of demographics on American education through the coming of immigrants, opening of majors, changing policy and opening of new schools. Immigration has an obvious negative and positive Impact on education In the united states. History shows that America started from the Immigration to America Trot all ten parts AT ten world America. Therefore, the oldest and the first universities in the United States are located on the east coast of America because the East coast was the side where the immigrants first landed during the 17th and the 18th centuries.
Example of those universities include Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, College of William and Mary Williamsburg in Virginia, Yale University in New Haven Connecticut, Princeton University in Princeton New Jersey, Columbia University in New York City, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Brown University in Providence, Rutgers New Brunswick in New Jersey, Dartmouth College. Hanover in New Hampshire. Moreover, during the 19th and the 20th centuries, many universities were established in all America to offer seats for growing number of immigrants.
In the past, the immigrants had a negative impact on the education cause most of them were not educated and the main reason they came was to find a place to live. CHANGING AMERICA’S DEMOGRAPHICS IMPACT ON EDUCATION 3 “Immigration patterns have also influenced the characteristics of high schools (Dietrich, 2005). Approximately one out every five children, age 18 or younger, is either an immigrant or a child of an immigrant” (p. 4). Nowadays, immigrants have a huge positive impact on the education system compared to the past.
De Gong, Garage, Hall & Singer (2011) stated that “44 of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas are high-skilled immigrant destinations, in which college-educated immigrants outnumber immigrants without high school diplomas by at least 25 percent” (p. 5). That shows that the immigrants have become a good influence on US education. In addition, the expanding of universities and schools in the United States and the increasing in the demographic led to open new studies and majors at universities. In American people started to make their majors more specific to follow all the fields that the students and researchers needed.
According to the 2000 Census projections for 2003-2004, there are 130,000 elementary, 65,000 secondary schools, and 6,400 postsecondary institutions. However, the more the increase in the United States demographics the more schools will be established. Moreover, the expansion of the United States’ cities, towns, and villages will requires establishing new schools and universities all around the country to provide seats for all students. Americans schools and universities have a diversity of international students with different cultures that require adding some changes with the education’s policies.
America is one of the best countries that respects the individuals’ and the groups’ rights in many areas such as religion, culture and race. I did a research two years ago about which is the most Appropriate Country for the Saudi Students and I was joking for the country that most respected our religion (Islam) and our culture. I gave Saudi students who are studying in 15 different countries questionnaires. Most of them agreed that America and Canada were the best countries for the Saudi students to study.
In addition, many people other than the Saudi agree with the concept that America is the land for freedom. The American government worked together with education to create a suitable environment that respects all cultures, religions and races in all American schools and universities by adding and changing in the education policies. In conclusion, the change in the demographic of the United States and its impact on the education by the immigrants with all its advantages and disadvantages provided aid in developing education.
