Chapter 10.1 - Notes

Question Answer
What are the 4 types of Science? Physics, Chemistry, Earth/Space, & Biology
What is the Organization of Life? Subatomic particles>atoms>molecule>organelles>cells>tissue> organs>organ system>organism>population>community> ecosystem>biosphere
What are the subatomic particles? protons (p+), neutrons (n0), electrons (e-)
What are atoms? Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, nitrogen (CHOPN)
What are molecules? -Carbohydrates – Carbon, Hydrogen, & Oxygen
-Fats (Lipids) – Carbon Hydrogen & Oxygen
-Protein – Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, & Nitrogen
-Nucleic Acids – Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, & -Nitrogen (DNA & RNA)
-H2O
What are organelles? -Baby organs
-Each organelle has a specific job.
What are cells? -unicellular (see w/microscope) (reproduce Asexually)
-multi-cellular (see w/naked eye) (reproduce Sexually)
What are organisms? -Unicellular (bacteria & protist) (Asexually)
-multicellular (fungus, plant & animal) (Sexually)
What is a population? -Species: a group of organisms that can reproduce & produce fertile offspring
-DNA must be the same (same number of chromosomes)
What is a community? -food chain (predator/prey)
-symbiotoic relationship (perminate relationship between 2 species
–3 types
—Parasitic
—Mutualstic
—Commensualistic
What is a parasitic relationship? 1 benefit, 1 harm
What is a mutualistic relationship? both benefit
What is a commenualstic relationship? 1 benefit, but the other is not harmed or benefitted
What is a ecosystem? -Biome
-developed based on the climate
-climate determines to Food Chain
–plants>herbivores>carnivores>omnivore
—Plants (Autotrophs – photosynthesis)
—Carnivores (Heterotrophs (consumers) – cellular resp.)
What is a biosphere? All of world that supports life
What is physics? the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy
What is chemistry? the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.
What is Earth/Space? the interconnections between the land, ocean, atmosphere, and life of our planet.
What is biology? the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution
What is a tissue? any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products
What is an organ? a part of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a specific vital function, such as the heart or liver in humans
What is an organ system? a group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. Each does a particular job in the body, and is made up of certain tissues.
What is a proton? a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign.
What is a neutron? a subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge, present in all atomic nuclei except those of ordinary hydrogen.
What is an electron? a stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids.
