Hamlet Horatio Speech Essay

4. Imagine you are Horatio. He has been asked to give an account of his and Hamlet’s actions by the new king, Fortinbras. What would he say? Sir Fortinbras, friends, noble audience lend me your ears; I come to speak in late Prince Hamlet’s death. Let me deliver a tale to th’ yet-unknowing world to Explain the happenings behind this bloodbath that You from the Polack wars and you from England Have since so arrive upon. Of late, the kingdom of Denmark was one of violent and unnatural acts, terrible accidents, Casual murders, deaths caused by trickery and by threat, and finally urderous plans that backfired on their perpetrators. All which lead to the most tragic death of Prince Hamlet; my honourable and noble friend – forever held in my heart. After the death of his great father, Hamlet appeared most distraught. Dressed in knighted colour and veiled lids, sad Hamlet kept aloof. One could suspect this depression was due to a number of things. Firstly, Hamlet’s father whom he regarded as courageous, Virtuous and godlike suffered an untimely death. Secondly, what was once love and affection between him And his lover Ophelia was turning bitter and cold.

Atop of that, the hasty remarriage of his Mother with Claudius Was perceived by everyone as illegal and incestual despite What that villain Claudius may have told the court. Such situation would have brought melancholy to any man. Hamlet’s suspicions that something was rotten in the state of Denmark, Were confirmed one bitter cold night when he was called upon To investigate what my companions and I saw the previous night. ‘Twas a wondrous strange night and mine own scepticism was waning Until the ghost reappeared in the form of the late king Hamlet. Hamlet determined to speak to this spirit which ossessed A incredible likeness to his father, disregarded its nature. The ghost, speaking not, only waved forth, beckoning Hamlet. Ay, fearing the spirit would lead our friend and Prince into Suicidal madness, we were unable to restrain dear Hamlet. Marcellus and I arrived only to find Hamlet with a mood so odd, Where ‘wild and whirling’ nonsensical words he was speaking. He seemed as enraged as ever, but with a sense of purpose. Bewildered was I, having seen the ghost, ordered not to reveal The happenings of that night, nor our lords newly ‘antic disposition’.

I knew not of the exact words spoken between them then, but, Hamlet later revealed that the dead King’s spirit accused Claudius of Murder; King Hamlet was not as presumed, Bitten by a snake, but poisoned in the ear while sleeping by his own brother. The ghost filled with anger and hatred demanded revenge For the punishment of sins in terrifying purgatory. From that night, Hamlet’s mind was anything but sane. Continuing his ‘antic disposition’ he fooled everyone, Feigning the disposition of a man out of his mind. He kept up his face of madness well methinks,

Making fools of those who pried into his business And withholding information to untrustworthy Informants veiled under the ‘guise of friendship. His love, fair Ophelia suffered most from his disguise, As Hamlet angered by the returned letters and expressions of affection Let loose all the bitterness he had been feeling since his Mother’s marriage to Claudius, biding her farewell With a final insult, upsetting her greatly. Twas later I learnt that fair maiden was a puppet to Polonius. Hamlet’s state of mind seemed to spiral into deep despair I thought him very brave to endure his hardships.

At first being slow to take action on his promise, The frustration and depression felt was halted as He drew inspiration from the travelling players, Spurring him into action and newly found passion. The reason for his inaction was due to the uncertainy Of the ghosts nature – how could it be trusted? What if it was a devil to lead him to damnation? So to prove the ghosts reliability, Hamlet was to prove the King guilty! His brilliant plan was to stage a performance of ‘The Murder of Gonzago’, for the night’s entertainment With a special speech he would write himself.

I was to assist him in his plan, where one scene Comes near of circumstance which he had told me Of his father’s death. I was to watch Claudius and To observe if his occulted guilt to prove the ghost’s Word true, and Claudius’conscience guilty. I watched ever so closely and long behold, Claudius convicted himself; as the murder Scene began an air of discomfort descended over him And he rose immediately and stormed out. Hamlet now knowing the truth seemed resolute and fearless! Finally knowing the truth and confirming the ghosts accusation Could carry out his father’s revenge.

Before Hamlet could exact his revenge, was called to his mother’s chamber. There he scorned her for her relationship with Claudius. Telling her of the sheer disgust and disapproval of it. Hamlet in sheer passion unknowingly killed Polonius With a stab of his sword into the tapestry thinking ‘Twas his evil Uncle – King Claudius. Who but a scheming Treacherous villain would hide behind a tapestry? Alas, the loss of fair Ophelia’s father by the hand of her love Was too much for her to bear! She was driven to madness And finally death; found drowned in a river among her flower wreaths.

King Claudius feeling threat looming, dealt with his nephew with haste, Sending him off to England to be killed! Another treacherous plot! Cunning Hamlet evaded the situation, sending me notice that that His ship had been invaded by pirates and he was to return to Denmark. Upon arrival we met and set forth – Hamlet with a grave thirst for revenge. Walking through a graveyard, Hamlet solemnly theorizing death exploded In grief and rage at sight of Ophelia’s funeral procession. Laertes obviously dishonoured by his presence begins a fight.

In Hamlets assault on Laertes, I saw a glimpse of Hamlet’s true feelings For Ophelia as he proclaimed his love for her – ‘twas truly moving. The fighting was halted and Hamlet stormed off – Me following. Hamlet explained to me his recent behaviour on board the ship, Where he discovered the Kings deadly plan to murder Hamlet in England. I was pleased and admired Hamlets swift action to combat these events And stressed the practical need of speedy action at that moment since Claudius Would have undoubtedly been informed of the result of his mission to England.

Hamlet’s very air and manner informed me that he was anxious to exact his revenge Seeing as he was so close to accomplishment. The courtier Osric then, entered and delivered a message of a wager from Claudius For a fencing match between him and Laertes. Hamlet accepted but I advised Him ‘against such wager as my intuition told me he would lose. The match started out surprisingly well with Hamlet Hitting Laertes two bouts in a row. But horror in the third bout As Laertes lunged and wounded sweet Hamlet drawing blood. Hamlet realizing by his wound that Laertes had been fencing

With an illegal sword returned the attack with great fury Gaining control of the weapon in exchange for his own And seriously wounding Laertes. The Queen drinking the wine Collapsed halting the match crying “The drink The drink! Hamlet I’m poisoned” with the Queens full confession of Claudius’ villainy before the assembled court Hamlet enraged Assumed control of the state and began immediate inquiry Into the King’s guilt, but was interrupted – Laertes revealing That Hamlet was slain by envenomed weapon they were both Doomed to death. Hamlet enraged by the treacherous villainy

Dispatched with haste the poison drink, forcing it down the Incestuous murderous damned Dane at last completing his revenge. Alas, I watched as my sweet prince with but minutes to live, death’s door creeping nearer I longed to emulate his nobility and drink from the poisoned cup, joining him in his deep sleep. But Hamlet, drawing his last breath in pain, requested I tell His story. Your Majesty, with sorrow I retell the story of Great Hamlet Whose mouth and voice will draw on no more, I pray thee Learn from the plots and errors happened, leaving the misery Of Denmark’s past behind but never to have’t forgotten.
