Hotel Rwanda/Paul Russebagina Essay

Hotel Rwanda Essay- Freedom vs. GovernmentWould you rather have freedom or be controlled by a government? There are three main reasons that government is chosen over freedom. First, not everybody has freedom. Second, people get more safety with government rather than when they are free. Third, chaos erupts because in freedom there are not any laws. The number one reason why government is chosen over freedom is because not everybody has freedom. If everybody has freedom, it would most likely be relied on more than government.

As you may know in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms…” Not only freedom, but rights, such as “the right to life liberty and the security of person. (UDHR, article 2)” But as demonstrated tin the Film, Hotel Rwanda, produced by Terry George, most of the people in this case in Rwanda, do not have freedom or even rights(MHR)! Unfortunately, as stated in the Universal declaration of human rights, “All humans are born free and equal in dignity. (UDHR, article 1)” is untrue.

Poor innocent babies become slaves when they are just four or five years old. They are taken away from their families and are sold in the slave trade market. Here again we see people breaking the law, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. (UDHR, article 4)” Another reason why government is chosen over freedom is because people get more safety with the government rather when they are free. As demonstrated in the film, Hotel Rwanda, all the Hutu people where protected by the government from the Tutsi armies (MHR).

But the Tutsi people were not protected by the government because they were free of the government (mostly because they are Tutsi and the government was Hutu). Occasionally, people want safety, and that it is what the government gives them, Also, shown in the film Hotel Rwanda, some Hutu did die (but not as much as the Tutsi) because the government is not perfect and is not always going to be there for those people (MHR). However, they’re still guaranteed better safety and protection then if they were free. Chaos is the third reason why government is relied on rather than freedom.

Without the government and with just freedom, chaos will erupt. If everyone follows all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, then there is going to be somebody who is going to take advantage of these rights and freedoms. Therefore, it is natural that not everybody has freedom (not that this should remain like this), but it is a natural inclination similar to the invisible hand. Otherwise, chaos will occur and spread, soon resulting in things like the Rwandan Genocide or World War I and World War II.

But under the government there are laws, and with laws people can not just do anything and become chaotic. The movie Hotel Rwanda portraying the Genocide in Rwanda in 1994 shows how the Rwandan people relied on the government and not freedom. This is because of the three main reasons; not everybody has freedom, people get more safety with government rather than with freedom, and chaos erupts when there is freedom because with freedom there are no laws. This was a massacre killing thousands of people, mostly Tutsi, because the Hutu had more power.
