How Single Mothers Survive Welfare and Low-Wage Work

How Single Mothers Survive Welfare and Low-Wage Work Many struggle to live without government aid and other public assistance, but ow we are living in a system where people went from welfare to work and back to welfare with a slowing economy those who got off of welfare went on make 9 to 12 hour for the first time in there lives and now what is happening once again is the is that people are back to a lower paying jobs or no job having to make a decisions about the ends justifying the means the authors talk a lot about what a mother would have to go through in order to make ends meet, but what they did not speak of is the single moms who are making it on low end paying jobs.

What constitutes a necessity certainly not what the authors Edin and Lein stated there talking about viewing someone else pocket book I dont care about there mathematics if your not living it you cant always understand, the topic drawing the line to me is kind of egotistical from the authors view, they may have not grew up without financial security and I especially disagree when the statement that Edin and Lein’s budgets also provided useful evidence about how much money a mother needs to spend Rhodes 2

In order to keep her family afloat, the writer in this reading, Christopher Jencks makes a very good argument about in theory every mother is capable of supplementing her welfare check, then he went on to say this explanation stretches credulity the mother would have to have interpersonal skills that allow her to make continuing claims on her relatives, or capacity to trade her charms for some mans money I think that is such a prejudice statement from the writer his argument started off on a good note and ended with slander because to make a suggestion like that means in my terms she would have to consistently use her family for resources and become a in home prostitute relying on some man to give her money, Now he is undermining a person who is on welfare assistance ability to make ends meet there are all types of ways to supplement like by using other government and state funded resources.

So I guess the same thing would apply for a man on welfare he would pinch off family members and find some woman with money so he can charm the pants off of her, to suggest that a mother would lack at least one of these resources just ridicules how a mother could lack both family and a man, because there are many single women who dont have those two resources and they still can supplement that welfare check and provide for there family. The article also stated that Edin and Lien did not find such mother suggests to him they cannot maintain their own households.

There is a story in the San Francisco Chronicle about two single moms one is mother of three and how she got off of welfare and has now been laid off and is struggling to find another decent job she has had to live on the edge taking her jewelry to a pawnshop, then buying it back at a higher price when she need cash, this lady is dealing is dealing with debt, having to worry about feeding here children and she is working for low-pay, the second single mother is age 27 was making 14 an hour as a accounting clerk and got laid off in October of this year, shes worried by her instability, but believes in her ability to pull through she has self-confidence and said she would never go back on welfare she rather work at McDonalds than live on aid she said its a personal intrusion into her life.

This leads me to believe that the authors must have interviewed some of the same type on women with the similar lifestyles; there are women out there who do draw a line when it comes to their families. The question that the Jencks poses is this article about would helping single mothers make them more numerous? NO, if that was the case the story of the two single moms in the San Francisco area would not exist and I would have to assume that there are many more women out in here in the world who are just like them. His point about the cultural wars between liberals and conservatives has left American children worse off and the few of single motherhood is by choice and seemed to some, as a menace is something that I think is true, the cycle continues because of the political separatism.
