Htc - Short Term and Long Term Plans Essay

INTRODUCTION HTC Corporation, formerly High Tech Computer Corporation, is a Taiwan-based manufacturer of smartphones founded in 1997. The company initially made smartphones based primarily on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software, but in 2009 it began to shift its focus away from Windows Mobile devices to devices based on the Android operating system. HTC is also a member of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of handset manufacturers and mobile network operators dedicated to the advancement of the Android mobile device platform.

The HTC Dream, marketed by T-Mobile in many countries as the T-Mobile G1, was the first phone to the market that uses the Android mobile device platform. HISTORY Although initially the company made notebook computers, HTC decided to make a strong push towards hand-held devices. In 1998, they started designing some of the world’s first touch and wireless handheld devices. The company has a rich heritage of many “firsts”, including creating the first Microsoft-powered smartphone (2002) and the first Microsoft 3G phone (2005). Their first major product was made in 2000.

HTC TACKLING EVENTS OCCURING Weighing the potential outcomes of Apple’s patent infringement lawsuit against HTC, several IP and patent lawyers say HTC’s phones could be barred from the United States, but both sides will probably look for a licensing agreement before getting to that point. To recap, Apple sued HTC for allegedly infringing 20 patents in its mobile phones.

The lawsuit calls out popular Android phones such as the Google Nexus One and the Droid Eris, but also mentions the Windows Mobile-powered Imagio. What makes this lawsuit particularly interesting is that Apple filed with the U. S. International Trade Commission, which has the power to stop infringing products from being imported stateside, as well as the U. S. District Court in Delaware. Of course, it’s impossible to say whether Apple can win without having an attorney spend days or weeks looking through the individual claims, but Jason Webb, patent attorney for Webb IP Law Group, thinks Apple has reason o be confident. “It makes a huge difference that it is twenty patents instead of just one,” he wrote in a e-mail. Michael Downs, a partner in the patent law firm Fincham Downs LLC, agreed, noting that Apple has used some of the same patents in a counter-lawsuit against Nokia. So let’s just assume that Apple’s lawsuit has merit. Experts say an injunction is possible, but not guaranteed. There is a chance HTC could modify its phones to the point that they no longer infringe Apple’s patents, but the attorneys I contacted wonder whether this is even possible.

With a such a large number of patents, some of them quite broad, it’ll really depend on the trade commission’s ruling. In any case, HTC would have to work with Google to banish any infringing features, said Webb. HTC and Google aren’t foolish, and they’re surely prepared to make their own claims against Apple. As HTC noted in response to the lawsuit, it has its own stable of patents. Tenenbaum says the case could either be settled quickly out of court, or escalated with both sides making counterclaims against each other and eventually negotiating a settlement.

HTC then filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission stating that Apple infridge upon 5 patents, they are: Patent #6,999,800 – Method for power management of a smartphone Patent #5,541,988 – Telephone dialler with a personalized page organization of telephone directory memory Patent #6,058,183 (PDF) – Telephone dialler with a personalized page organization of telephone directory memory Patent #6,320,957 – Telephone dialler with easy access memory Patent #7,716,505 (PDF) – Power control methods for a portable electronic device The case is still in progress but HTC only has to prove infringement of one of these claims to win the case. SHORT AND LONG TERM PLANS: Htc being one of the first companies to have the Android OS in their phones plan to capture the largest market share. Initially there were about 300 apps being added in the market every month and now has increased to 12000 apps a month. They released the worlds first 4G phone, the Evo 4G. The phone is one of the most powerful phone in the world today and its planning to capture the market by being ready for 4G out of the box. Long term plans: Women who want to surf while watching the telly in their living room are a prime market for tablets according to HTC. Market research conducted by the martphone manufacturer found that likely users of the expensive drink trays were women who wanted to communicate with friends with a tablet on their lap while watching their favourite television programmes. “HTC views Microsoft as a strategic partner and Windows Phone 7 as a promising smart phone operating system platform; and we plan to rollout our first Windows Phone 7 based smart phone before the end of year,” a statement by HTC reads. “We are talking about three form factors at this stage. There’s going to be one available at launch, which is big touch screen, gigahertz processor, dedicated graphics chip. And only touch, no keyboard entry.

Chassis two is going to be slide with a keyboard, so looking more like the Palm Treo, touch screen plus a QWERTY keyboard. Chassis three, I don’t think we’ve released any data as about yet but they’re the three in total we’re going to have. Candybar? I’d say so,” said a Microsoft representative from Australia. Conclusion: HTC from the first has had a major role to play in the electronic world and have had a big hand ever since. They have targeted people of all needs which can be seen from their short term plans too. Their long term plans are set to stay in the race with other companies too and their conflict with apple may be a stepping stone for them,if in their favour.
