Importance of Higher Education Essay

Higher Education Important Today? The American dream consists of growing up in a suburb with a white picket fence and two kids. Another part of the American dream that people believe in is, attending a college or university after highlights. For all of the time growing up, we believed that we had to manage good grades throughout middle school and high school so that we would have the opportunity to attend or be admitted by a higher education facility. Then, hopefully upon graduation there shall be a Job awaiting.

However, the thing that college does not guarantee is a that Job. College is on average around thirty to forty thousand dollars a year and at the end of it we will be investing about one hundred thousand dollars. This includes the deduction of tuition costs from scholarships and grants. With that being said, if we aren’t guaranteed Jobs is the investment worth it? For many students in this day in age, we need to take out loans to afford the tuition and with the increase in “buyers” toward higher education the loans are becoming much easier to come by, making it easier for the college to accept them.

Currently there is more debt from student loans compared to those of auto debt and credit card debt. Some people may be skeptical that all this money is worth it and at the end of the day, maybe if we are lucky, we may have the opportunity to work that 9 to 5 desk Job we had been working for. Does the cost outweigh the benefits when nothing is guaranteed? In my case, Eve always wanted to be an exotic veterinarian, which takes four years of college and an extra two years to receive my doctorates. This is required for me to be able to have the career I dream of.

So I believe that attending a university is definitely necessary, but there is no way I could become a vet if I did not attend a college and am handed the most important paper f completion. Once I graduate I am certain I will obtain a Job. This is because, I have used some of the skills I have learned in college such as networking, organization, and time management to acquire contacts and meet people that will help me out in the future. As I stated earlier, you are not guaranteed that Job and if you are lucky you will actually obtain it.

But in this case, the question will not be if you are lucky enough to get a Job, but rather if you have the skills to acquire that Job? College is a learning experience that does not only teach you knowledge but also life skills. A key concept in life which intertwines with college is being optimistic and having a positive outlook for the future. Of course, if you graduate and have a pessimistic attitude about getting Jobs, interviews, and so forth you will probably not get hired.

On the other hand, if you are relentlessly searching for Jobs and networking through people along with having a college degree you have a much better chance of receiving a Job. Saying that college does not guarantee a career is nonsense. Obviously, a piece of paper with the name of a higher education is worthless, but the kills and knowledge from the university is what really counts. If you go into an interview without prior knowledge of the position, the business, or the background you will not be hired.

Being a Job seeker requires you to research and investigate the potential field you will be engaging in along with your own personal skill set acquired This degree in some sense could be a ticket to success. By this I mean, with the degree you have more opportunities to apply and obtain Jobs than people without degrees. Many businesses will not offer an interview if you do not have one. In a way degree and a college education is nearly a footstep into the door and we control the destiny from that point on.

People who have degrees earn more on average than people without them. If a business is hiring a candidate, and there are two applicants, one with a college degree and one without, and they both do great on their interviews, more often than not the person with the degree will be hired than the person without. It is fair to say that the graduate has an upper hand even before walking into the interview, even if the other interviewer is more suited in the field or as more experience.

This is due to the fact that the hirer takes into account that the individual who attended a university has more knowledge, which in some cases may be true but in others may not. At the end of the day, higher education is definitely a necessity and worth the cost. College is a vital stepping stone towards the American Dream, but it is dependent on the individual. College along with personal experience and background all come together in unison to make the dream possible. You control the destiny of your dreams, but higher education is more helpful than hurtful.
