In my organization there are many types of problem identification and formulation styles but the one most used is the logical and rational style. The military organization is a complex organization and we have very little room for mistakes, so when making decisions it has to be the correct one the first time around. Many lives depend on these decisions so it is important for are leadership to think logical and rational.
When military leaders make decisions that effect their troops there is always a briefing that follows the decision, they have to state the reasoning behind the decisions they made the cause and the effects, and what the outcome may be from this decision. When solving problems military leaders have to always think ahead for whatever the next problem may be.
Rational thinking leaders are what make the military what it is today. They are the ones who have been the success stories behind this War on Terrorism. Leaders such as Collin Powell, who believed that every leader should take responsibility for their own action. He had a statement that “being responsible involves pissing people off“ (Harari 2007).
Ironically, by procrastinating on the difficult choices, by trying not to get anyone mad, and by treating everyone equally “nicely” regardless of their contributions, you’ll simply ensure that the only people you’ll wind up angering are the most creative and productive people in the organization . (Harari 2007). Here is where are leaders have to think rationally, because its not how they piss people off its who they piss off that will come back and haunt them later. Harari, O. (2007).
