Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a condition in which people have an excessive sense of self-importance, an extreme preoccupation with themselves, and lack of empathy for others ( Board, A. D. A. M. Editorial). Three parts of this disorder will be dabbled upon in this paper, the description, the causation, and the treatment of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The first of which will be the description. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is characterized by a long-standing pattern of grandiosity, a lack of empathy for other people, and a powerful need for admiration.

There are a few behaviors that must be present for someone to be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It includes but is not limited to a grandiose sense of self-importance in which the person exaggerates themselves and his or her achievements and expects to be recognized as superior because of it (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms I Psych Central”). Character traits involving Narcissistic Personality Disorder include cockiness, manipulativeness, selfishness, power motives, and vanity (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder. ).

In order for a person to be diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder they must meet five or more of the following symptoms; (l)he or she has a grandiose sense of self-importance, (2)believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people, (3)requires excessive admiration, (4)has a very strong sense of entitlement, e. g. , unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her xpectations, (5)is exploitative of others, e. g. takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends, (6)lacks empathy, e. g. , is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others, (7)is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her, and (8)regularly shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms I Psych Central. “). As for general demographics Narcissistic Personality Disorder is more common in males han females and it only affects one percent of the population (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms I Psych Central. ). Onto the causation of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, while the cause of NPD is not well-understood it is believed to be controlled in a biopsychosocial model of causation. Many professionals believe that NPD is a mix between biological and genetic factors, social factors, and the psychological factors. Finally it is time for the treatment of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Clinical treatment for NPD is rare due to the fact that most narcissists avoid therapy (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder. “). Should a person with this disorder gain treatment there are individual and group therapy to help with changing maladaptive behaviors. Through individual therapy the therapist will try to treat the symptoms related to crisis and relatively external axis I diagnoses so as not to disturb the ontiguity of the patient’s psyche due the importance of narcissism to the patient (“Narcissistic Personality Disorder Treatment I Psych Central. ). Group therapy is acknowledge others as separate persons, and to decrease the need for self-defeating coping mechanisms.
