Opposing Gay Marriage Essay

Opposing Gay Marriage Nearly seventy percent of people in the United States oppose gay marriage. There are a lot of reasons why gay marriage should be opposed. Marriage is an institution between one man and one woman. Marriage is for procreation (The Divine Institution of Marriage). Gay and lesbian couples would represent a profound change in the meaning of marriage. I strongly disagree with same sex marriage because it is against the laws of nature, society and religion. First let’s look at some reasons why gay couples think they should have the right to marry. They think that denying them is a violation of religious freedom.

They also think that it encourages people to have strong family values and give up high risk sexual lifestyle. If you ask a gay person what is the most important reason why they should be allowed to married, they would say the only thing that should matter in a marriage is love. So what is the big deal? If two people love each other, should they be allowed the same rights, privileges and responsibilities, no matter their gender? Yet, marriage is so much greater than the commitment of two people to each other. Marriage is an institution that much of our culture revolves around.

The main reason for denying marriage to gay couples is that most religions consider homosexuality a sin; however, the First Amendment of the constitution clearly states that a person’s religious views or lack thereof must be protected. Marriage by the state is a secular activity; the government cannot start making laws just because a religion says they should. Approving gay marriage can encourage people to have strong family values and give up high risk sexual lifestyles. One of the main arguments against gay marriage is that it would further erode family values; however, the opposite is true.

The problems related to sexuality in our society such as STDs stem from carefree, frivolous lifestyles; in other words, having frequent, unprotected sex with many partners. Marriage encourages people to settle down and to give up that type of lifestyle. Married people commit themselves to one partner and work to build a life together. Is that the type of behavior we want to encourage? Now that we have looked at some reasons why gay couples should be able to marry, let’s look at some reason why they should not be able to marry. Most religions consider homosexuality a sin.

It would weaken the definition and respect for the institution of marriage. The gay lifestyle is not something to be encouraged, as a lot of research shows it leads to a much lower life expectancy, psychological disorders, and other problems. Most religions consider homosexuality a sin. Virtually every religion in the world, including the major ones in this country, considers homosexuality unacceptable. It is offensive and a swipe to the religious freedom of the majority to have to recognize a relationship they consider sinful.

The legal system in the United States evolved out of the laws contained in the bible. We should not go even farther to tear down those laws. It would weaken the definition of marriage. Marriage is the most sacred institution in this country, and every society considers it the joining of a man and a woman. It makes biological sense only a man and woman can pro-create. The gay lifestyle is not something to be encouraged, as a lot of research it leads to a much lower life expectancy, psychological disorders, and other problems.

Studies show that homosexuals, for variety of reasons, have life expectancies of approximately twenty years less than the general population. Just like a lifestyle of smoking, drinking, etc unhealthy lifestyles should be discouraged (Deem 1). Therefore, one should strongly oppose gay marriage. The church of God preaches out of the bible, and the bible says “the unrighteous person will not inherit God’s kingdom do not be misled neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor men kept for unnatural purpose, nor men who lie with men will inherit God’s kingdom (Corinthians 6:9). This says a lot that if a person is a believer in God, and what he teaches out of the bible, a person should live their life according to the scriptures. The bible has been rewritten many times, but when it comes right down to it, all of the rewrites of the bible scriptures mean the same. Bible believing Christians cannot just look the other way, and say that same sex marriage is simply a personal choice, not when God defines the participants in homosexual conduct as sinning greatly (Genesis 13:13).

Christians cannot fall for the modern mantra that is not our business what people choose to do behind closed doors. The bible argues against gay marriage, so that does not leave bible believers the option of simply ignoring conduct that God is seen to have judged severely in the bible record. God specifically says that homosexual conduct is sinning greatly; therefore, no matter what religion a person maybe gay marriage is wrong. Marriage between a man and a woman is central to the plan of salvation.

The sacred nature of marriage is closely linked to the power of procreation. Only a man and a woman together have the natural biological capacity to conceive children. This power of procreation to create life and bring God’s spirit children into the world is sacred and precious. Misuse of this power undermines the institution of the family and thereby weakens the social fabric. Strong families serve as the fundamental institution for transmitting to future generations the moral strengths, traditions, and values that sustain civilizations.

As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms, “The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society (Divine Institution of marriage). ” Now that we have discussed the religion aspects and institution of marriage now let’s talk some statistics about the homosexual lifestyle. One study reports that the average homosexual has between twenty and hundred and six partners per year. The average heterosexual has eight partners in a lifetime. Homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States.

They make up only 1-2% of the population. Homosexuals live unhealthy lifestyles, and have historically accounted for the bulk of syphilis, gonorrhea, Hepatitis B, the “gay bowel syndrome”, tuberculosis and cytomegalovirus. Homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands. 78% of homosexuals are affected by STDs.

Dr Daniel Capron, a practicing psychiatrist, says, “Homosexuality by definition is not healthy and wholesome. The homosexual person, at best, will be unhappier and more unfulfilled than the sexually normal person. It takes approximately $300,000 to take care of each AIDS victim, so thanks to the promiscuous lifestyle of homosexuals, medical insurance rates have been skyrocketing for all of us. Homosexuals were responsible for spreading AIDS in the United States, and then rose up violent groups like Act Up and Ground Zero to complain about it.

Even today homosexuals account for well over 50% of the AIDS cases in the United States, which is quite a large number considering that they account for only 1-2% of the population (Statistics on Homosexuality and its Effects). In conclusion, same sex marriage is against the laws of nature, society and religion. Two people of the same sex should not be joined in holy matrimony. What the society is trying to do is make the gay issue a way of life, but the Holy Bible teaches against it. Therefore, gays should not glamorize there life style, or try to get other people to except it, because it is wrong!
