Randy Pausch’s Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams My first words after the video were, “What an inspiring man. ” Randy spoke with such excitement and joy. His body language was light and free. His voice was honest, relaxed, clear and confident. I had to start the video over in the very beginning, because I was confused on whom he was. I had to be reminded that he was the one with cancer, not someone he was talking about. I enjoyed listening to his positive and encouraging language.
Some people are gifted with an ability to speak and captivate their listeners. Randy is one of those people. My favorite story he told was about when he and his mentor Andy went for a walk. Randy stated, “Andy put his arm around my shoulders and we went for a little walk and he said, Randy, it’s such a shame that people perceive you as so arrogant. Because it’s going to limit what you’re going to be able to accomplish in life. ” The purpose for the story is so awesome.
He was sharing an excellent example of how a mentally in-tuned leader /mentor can use a positive approach to bring their under-study to a higher level of personal awareness. A passionate leader can motivate the worst of crews to do the most amazing tasks, when they are centered in positive and encouraging thinking processes. Another comment he made was, “And as you get older, you may find that “enabling the dreams of others” is even more fun. ” This is another gift of life that true leaders are blessed with when they make themselves available to the truths of life.
To be successful is an accomplishment that is honorable and deserving of recognition, but when you are the strong hand in helping someone else achieve their dreams and life goals you have made an impression on the world that will perpetuate goodness for an endless amount of time. Self indulgence only lasts until we get weak or fail at something. Then we have nothing left to draw from. To promote someone other than ourselves is an accomplishment that will fill our soul with light and rejuvenation to be drawn upon endlessly.
Spreading goodness and kindness becomes a continuous fountain of strength for our own soul. I enjoyed the video. I know I will watch it again, because he was so refreshing to listen to. It is evident why his students were so responsive to him. He is an educator and leader with true passion and desire to empower others. His efforts are truly for the gain of his students. His principles about life are evident in the joy he expresses when he sees the good in someone else.
