The goal of human services is to support individuals as well as communities function at their maximum potential, overcoming personal and social barriers as effectively as possible in the major domains of living (2007 Martin, Michelle) As a human services worker our goal is to; develop, increase and maintain our clients self sufficiency skills, and level of independent functioning, to improve their quality of life, , to provide empowerment, to develop and increase our clients coping and problem solving skills; ultimately our human services goal is to teach them how to fish.

The history of human services There has been a need to help others since the beginning of time. Our current milieu of human services has its roots traced back to the late 1800’s, but a more recent history of human services can be traced back to the1950’s when there was a new consciousness that there were parts of our population that were in need of services. This new consciousness of the era was complemented by a legislation that moved many of the needed services to communities, which led to many working class organizations led by clients, or consumers needing services.

In 1956 NIMH or the National Institute of Mental Health provided the basics that allowed Purdue University to start an associate’s degree program in mental health. This in turn was the beginning of a fully fledged human service program, which later developed in different parts of the country.
