“You Were Absolutely Fine” is a simple narrative of two people who are wholly out of sync. but either non cognizant of it ( in the girl’s instance ) or non rather certain how to acquire out of it ( in Peter’s instance ) .
Peter is a rummy. and when he’s rummy. he does and says things which he does non retrieve and does not–when sober–mean. He isn’t certain precisely what he said to her. but as the narrative goes on. it becomes clear that his words have had a great impact on her. She is be aftering a hereafter for the two of them. even though we get the thought that Peter does non believe of her in such a expansive. long-run mode.
The miss efforts to warrant all of his bibulous actions because she must besides warrant Peter’s confession of love for her. She works really difficult to do his drunken vocalizing. faltering. reasoning. and general asinine behaviour seem “not so bad” because if everything else he did while rummy was an embarrassment and a error. so his words of love were. as well–something the miss can non bear to believe about.
The “pale immature man” ( Peter ) and the clear-sighted miss are retrieving from a party where the immature adult male was intoxicated and made rather a spectacle. He’s worried he’s been excessively over the top. she tries to reassure him.
“You were all right. ” she said. “Don’t be so foolish about it. Everybody was brainsick about you. The maitre d’hotel was a small disquieted because you wouldn’t stop vocalizing. but he truly didn’t mind…” She tells him of his vocalizing. and claiming the server was his long lost brother stolen by itinerants. and dissing a man’s tie. He fell on the ice. but she tries to reassure him it wasn’t because he was drunk. it was merely icy. Anyone could hold fallen. They so took a “lovely long ride” in a cab where Peter shows her his “true” ego. A side she hasn’t seen before.
“You said such lovely. lovely things. ” she said. “And I’d ne’er known. all this clip. how you had been experiencing about me. and I’d ne’er dared to allow you see how I felt about you. And so last night—oh. Peter beloved. I think that cab drive was the most of import thing that of all time happened to us in our lives. ” Peter has evidently said more than he meant to state and the miss has taken his bibulous confessions to bosom. She’s smitten and is keeping him to the declarations of fondness that he can’t even retrieve.
